A Guide to Long Stay Visas for Luxembourg

The country of Luxembourg might be small, but it packs a punch with its rich history, beautiful architecture, and open-minded culture.

If you are planning an extended stay in Luxembourg, there are a lot of things to do to prepare. For instance, you need to learn a bit about Luxembourg and the city you're staying in so you can get the lay of the land. Then, there's finding the best airline tickets, lodging, and figuring out what you're going to bring with you.

In the midst of all of that, there's the more administrative side of the process, so to speak. And that's making sure that you have the necessary permissions to stay in Luxembourg legally.

In this guide, we're going to talk about just that: long stay visas for Luxembourg. We're going to take a look at who needs a long stay visa to stay in Luxembourg, what types there are, and how to apply for them. We will also look at visa requirements, which are an essential part of the process.

What is a Luxembourg long stay visa?

A Luxembourg long stay visa, also referred to as a "visa D" is a type of visa that allows foreigners to stay in Luxembourg for a longer period of time.

In Luxembourg, long stay visas are required for third country nationals who intend to stay for longer than 90 days. Third country nationals are foreigners who are not EU, EEA, or Schengen country citizens.

Visa Ds are valid from 91 days to a year, maximum.

Who needs a Luxembourg long stay visa?

Whether or not you need a long stay visa for your trip depends on your nationality and how long you're planning to stay in Luxembourg.

If you are NOT a citizen of an EU country AND intend to stay in Luxembourg for more than 90 days, you need a long stay visa.

How to apply for a long stay visa for Luxembourg

To obtain a long stay visa, you will need to go through a multi-step application process. Even though there are several steps involved, the process itself is pretty straightforward.

  • Determine which type of long stay visa you need. There are several different types that correlate with the reason you're staying in Luxembourg (for work or to study, for example).
  • Apply for a temporary authorization to stay on Luxembourg's official General Department of Immigration website. You must do this from your current country of residence.
  • Begin preparing your visa application. This includes collecting all of the required documentation in the requested formats. Your application will consist of several documents and a completed application form.
  • Book an in-person visa appointment at a Luxembourg diplomatic or consular mission in your country or residence. The appointment must happen within 90 days of your temporary authorization to stay application. If your country of residence doesn't have a Luxembourg diplomatic or consular mission, the appointment may need to take place at the Belgian consulate or embassy.
  • Attend your appointment bringing all of the collected documents with you. You will need to submit them at this appointment.
  • Await an answer!

  • A visa for private reasons

Keep in mind that depending on your nationality, the process may differ and the visa offerings may differ.

Luxembourg long stay visa requirements

While anyone can apply for a long stay visa for Luxembourg (in theory), there are requirements that applicants need to meet in order to qualify.

There are a couple of "sets" of requirements, so to speak. One applies to all applicants, regardless of the specific type of long stay visa they're applying for. The other depends on the specific type of visa. First, let's take a look at the general requirements that all applicants need to meet (and prove).

  • You must have 2 copies of your completed long stay visa application form.
  • The temporary authorization to stay (that you applied for at the beginning of the process).
  • You must have a valid passport that will remain valid 3 months after your requested visa's intended expiration.
  • Two copies of a recent passport-sized photo.

You will need to bring all of these documents to your visa appointment.

Next, there are the documents that vary depending on which visa you're applying for. First and foremost, you will be able to find the specific requirements on Luxembourg's official immigration site.

As a general note, you should always look to official sources (like embassies and trusted partners) for information about visa and immigration requirements and policies. They will always have the most accurate and updated information.

That being said, here are a couple examples of different requirements depending on the visa type you're applying for.

  • One of the additional requirements for salaried workers is an official work contract.
  • One of the requirements for students is the ability to prove that they can sustain themselves (financially) for the entire duration of their stay in Luxembourg.

These aren't the only additional requirements, but this gives you an example of the types of documents that could be requested.

Additional requirements

Pay close attention to the entire process. For many long stay visas, you may need to do additional processes once you arrive in Luxembourg. This can include mandatory medical check-ups, residency applications, etc.
