Switzerland is one of the most popular countries in Europe when it comes to travelers from abroad. Famous for its picturesque lakes, outdoor activities like hiking and skiing, and charming villages bursting with history and culture, Switzerland is a true gem.
European travel requirements continue to evolve and change over time, which can make planning a trip to Switzerland both exciting and, sometimes, a bit confusing. We’re here to help.
In this article, we will guide you through everything you need to know about ETIAS and how it applies to your upcoming visit to Zürich, Geneva, or wherever it is you’re off to!
Is ETIAS required for Switzerland?
Yes, if you are traveling to Switzerland without a Swiss/Schengen visa and you are not a citizen of a Schengen country, you will need ETIAS to travel to Switzerland from 2026 on (this includes US and UK citizens).
Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, and others will need to obtain ETIAS before traveling to the Schengen area (of which Switzerland is a part of). Travelers from these countries do not need visas to enter Switzerland. Because of that, ETIAS authorization will now be required instead.
ETIAS isn’t a visa – it’s approval to enter the area.
If you are a citizen of a country that does not have a visa-waiver agreement with the Schengen area (India or China, for example), you do not need to apply for ETIAS. Instead, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa. Learn more in our Switzerland visa guide.
Do I need ETIAS if I have a Swiss visa?
No. You don’t need ETIAS if you have a valid Switzerland visa (or Schengen visa).
Application steps
Applying for an ETIAS for your trip to Switzerland should only take 10-20 minutes and can be done entirely online!
The steps are as follows:
Step 1. Fill out the form on ETIAS.
You’ll be asked for personal details such as your travel plans, nationality, and passport number.
Step 2. Answer a few questions about your background.
According to the official European Union website, you’ll be asked to share your parents’ first names, current occupation, and level of education. You’ll also be asked about any past criminal convictions.
Step 3. Pay the ETIAS fee.
There is a fee when it comes to ETIAS authorization. You will need to pay it at this time with a credit or debit card. This fee is 20 euros and is waived for all applicants under the age of 18 or over the age of 70.
Step 4. Wait for your ETIAS to be approved.
You likely won’t be waiting long – ETIAS approval is usually immediate or in a couple of minutes. If it’s not immediate, don’t worry. Some applications may take longer.
In fact, while it’s uncommon, approval can take up to 30 days, so it’s best to plan ahead and apply well before your departure date.
Step 5. Enjoy your trip to Switzerland!
When your ETIAS is approved, it will be automatically linked to your passport. This digital process will allow authorities to see it when they scan your passport. However, it never hurts to say the approval email or even print it out – just in case.
Your ETIAS is valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can reapply by following the same steps as you did the first time you applied.
In case of refusal
If your ETIAS is denied, you’ll receive an official email outlining the reason(s). In this email, you’ll also be given instructions on how to appeal the decision if you believe it was unfairly made. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to travel to Switzerland without ETIAS approval.
Europe and ETIAS
According to the EU website, a valid ETIAS does permit you to travel throughout the Schengen area and Cyprus. With that being said, it does not guarantee entry. Border guards can still deny you entry.
