Home > Do I Need ETIAS for Liechtenstein? Everything You Need to Know
If you’re planning a trip to Liechtenstein and are wondering whether or not you need ETIAS, you’ve come to the right place.
Liechtenstein, an alpine principality between Austria and Switzerland, offers medieval castles, snow-capped mountains, and a ton of culture in one small package.
As European travel requirements continue to evolve, it can be confusing trying to understand what is and isn’t needed when traveling to Liechtenstein. We’re here to help!
This article will walk you through everything you need to know about ETIAS and how it applies to your upcoming trip to Vaduz, Balzers, or wherever it is you’re headed to in this charming country.
Yes, from 2025 on, if you are from a visa-exempt country, you will need ETIAS to visit Liechtenstein (this includes US citizens – even those who didn’t previously need ETIAS to visit Liechtenstein).
For context, some countries (like the US, Canada, and the UK) have visa-waiver agreements with the Schengen area (which includes Liechtenstein). These agreements allow citizens from said countries to travel to Liechtenstein without the need to apply for a visa. Citizens from these countries will need to apply for ETIAS to travel to the Schengen area.
ETIAS isn’t a visa, nor does it replace a visa. It is simply an approval saying you’re allowed to enter the Schengen zone.
If you are visiting Liechtenstein with a visa, or are a citizen of a Schengen country, you do not need ETIAS.
No. If you hold a valid Liechtenstein visa (Schengen visa), you do not need to apply for ETIAS. Only those traveling to Liechtenstein without a visa need to apply for ETIAS.
Applying for ETIAS for your upcoming trip to Liechtenstein is a simple process that is entirely online. Make sure to have your travel details (like dates and destination), as well as your passport and a debit or credit card ready.
This form will ask for key details such as your name, travel plans, nationality, and your passport number.
According to the official European Union website, you’ll be asked to share your parents’ first names, occupation, and level of education. You’ll also be asked about any past criminal convictions.
Pay the 7 euro ETIAS fee with a debit or credit card. This fee is waived for applicants under the age of 18 or over the age of 70.
Approval usually happens in minutes, but if you don’t get approval right away, don’t worry. While uncommon, in some cases, ETIAS approval can take up to 30 business days, so make sure you apply early and plan ahead.
Once approved, you’re authorized to travel to Liechtenstein. Your ETIAS approval will automatically link to your passport, digitally, so authorities at the border can see that you’ve been permitted to enter the Schengen zone. With that being said, it never hurts to screenshot your approval or print a paper copy just in case.
Your ETIAS is valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. When it’s time to reapply, just follow the same steps listed above.
According to the EU website, a valid ETIAS permits you to travel throughout the Schengen area and Cyprus. With that being said, it does not guarantee entry. Border guards can still deny you entry.
